Digital Transgender Archive
Letter written by Dr. Alan L. Hart, an American physician, radiologist, tuberculosis researcher, and writer to Mrs. Mary Roberts Rinehart, an American mystery writer and nurse. Hart is known as one of the first trans men to undergo hysterectomy in the United States. Because Hart ordered for his personal letters and photographs to be destroyed upon his death, few such materials exist today. However, in this letter, Hart describes his transition, being forcibly outed by a colleague, his subsequent medical career, and a manuscript of an autobiography he never published. Hart concludes by requesting that Rinehart read his autobiography and offer advice.
