Alfred Wellesley in drag as Mrs Sinbad. Photographic postcard, 192- (?).
Mr. Alfred Wellesley as "Mrs Sinbad" in "Sinbad the sailor"
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
Alfred Wellesley (ca. 1875-1943) enjoyed great success as a comic actor, on stage and in film during the 1920s and 1930s. This autographed postcard shows him in pantomime drag demonstrating the move towards more glamorous Dames which occurred towards the 1920s. Fewer washerwomen and more fairy queens was pretty much the order of the day. Wellesley's make-up and garb is still comic, but the furs and jewels add another dimension (James Gardiner)
