This is a press release about Victoria Schneider's civil rights lawsuit against San Francisco. On June 14, 1996, Schneider, an intersex woman who had transitioned, was unlawfully strip-searched at San Francisco County Jail after being arrested for solicitation. Officers had computer records confirming she was female but strip-searched her anyway, laughing and threatening to house her with male inmates. Strip searches without probable cause violate constitutional rights and California law. The city denied the incident happened and demanded Schneider undergo a psychological exam. Many LGBTQ+ organizations supported her case, including CUAV and the Harvey Milk Democratic Club. Her attorneys were Karen Snell and Kate Stoia from Clarence & Snell law firm. This item comes from the Victoria Schneider papers at the GLBT Historical Society.
