An interview with Maddie Deutsch, MD, MPH, a queer, lesbian, transgender white woman. At the time of this interview, she was the Medical Director for Transgender Care at the University of California - San Francisco (UCSF) and the President-Elect of USPATH, the US Professional Association for Transgender Health. Prior to her work at UCSF, Deutsch started a trans medicine program at the LA LGBT Center. In this oral history interview, Deutsch describes moving from emergency medicine into LGBT-specific healthcare in response to a need she perceived for trans-competent healthcare and access to hormone therapy. Deutsch reflects on how and why the field of trans medicine has shifted in the last twenty years, moving towards an informed consent model. Further she reflects on the impact that the Affordable Care Act has had on the availability of trans-affirming medical care, as well as the inclusion of non-binary identities in trans medicine.
