An interview with Emmett Schelling, a transmasculine activist based in San Antonio, Texas. At the time of this interview, Schelling was the Executive Director of the Transgender Education Network of Texas [TENT,] the largest trans advocacy and education organization in the state. Additionally, he served on the Community Council for Transform Houston, as a board member of Deeds Not Words, and a Co-Director for the TransFORWARD, a Texas trans-powered research collective. Prior to his work with TENT, Schelling was the president of the San Antonio Gender Association [SAGA,] and previously worked in corporate management. In this oral history interview, Schelling discusses his upbringing and transition, his initial forays into trans advocacy work in the mid 2010s, his work with TENT and the organization's larger work within trans politics in Texas, trans education of health care providers, educators, and others, his thoughts on Texas politics and the use of trans people as "political footballs," and his visions of a better future for trans people.
