Members of "Harry Gold's Margate Entertainers", one in drag, pose for a group portrait. Photographic postcard, 1937.
"Harry Gold's Margate Entertainers" 1937
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
The group pose together wearing matching white summer attire and the men also have straw hats. They pose in a pyramid-shaped composition. Harry Gold (born Patrick Ricks; 1866-1946) started a troupe of entertainers in Margate as early as 1903. With many changes of cast, Gold's Entertainers were a fixture of this popular Thanet resort right up until the outbreak of war in 1939. The catalogued photograph shows them almost at the end of their long run. An unidentified figure in drag is seated in the centre.
