A British concert party somewhere in the Middle East towards the end of World War I, performing a tableau entitled 'The picnic on Highgate Hill' (according to inscription on verso). The majority of the men are in drag. A large group of performers are posed in front of a leafy landscape backdrop wearing a variety of costumes including plush 'cat' suits, and a Dick Whittington. The drag costumes are those of ragged gypsy dancers. A uniformed private in uniform of unidentified regiment stands to right just in shot partially behind the backdrop
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photographs of military, naval, and prisoner-of-war camp drag.
