A man in drag wearing a very large hat with a veil, stands in front of a painted backdrop, with dense foliage. Photographic postcard, 1911.
To Elsie ... 1911
He is holding a plush velvet muff and is wearing very distinctive costume. Very sophisticated amateur drag at Stratford-on-Avon in 1911. This man makes a convincing woman, although the costume is rather badly made and improvised. The huge hat with 'bees-nest' veiling and the 'Harem pants' are very stylish, and may be inspired by the Ballets Russes, which had since their first season in Paris in 1909 caused a sensation and proved a profound effect on fashion
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photographs of military, naval, and prisoner-of-war camp drag.
