Monica Joy Cross is a Black trans woman raised in California. At the time of this oral history, Cross was the Pastor at First Christian Church of Oakland and an Associate Pastor at Tapestry Ministries in Berkeley. In this oral history, she speaks at length about growing up in Los Angeles, her spirituality and faith, coming out, the impact of the White Gaze and its impact on Black communities and Black queer and trans communities, and harassment. Cross also discusses her work on The Collaborative Community Planning Council which provides resources to primarily AIDS organizations in Black community. She also touches upon serving in the Navy for 22 years, her experiences as a parent and as a grandparent, and her hopes for the trans community and its progress, as well as her hopes for the respect of Trans Women of Color.
