Digital Transgender Archive
He is wearing a delicately patterned dress, has styled blonde hair and is smiling at the viewer. Jimmy Slater (1896-1996) enjoyed one of the longest and most successful careers as a drag artist, entrepreneur and producer; primarily in the northern English holiday resorts. This photograph, dated 1945, was obviously a favourite of his, in use many years after the photograph was taken. Hair and make-up here are heavily influenced by the Hollywood star Jean Harlow, (the original 'platinum blonde') who died in 1937 (James Gardiner)
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
