Founded in 1986, the Imperial Court of New York is a chapter of the International Court System, an LGBTQ organization focused on charitable fundraising and public service. Imperial Courts are known for their elaborate pageantry based on the world of European nobility, including costumes, titles, and the annual election of a local Empress and Emperor. The International Court System was founded in 1965 by San Francisco drag queen José Sarria, the Grand Mere, Absolute Empress I de San Francisco, also known as the Widow Norton.
