Digital Transgender Archive

Red Jordan Arobateau (1943-2021) was an American author, artist, and trans man. Arobateau was a prolific creator, specializing in poetry, drama, and erotica, and he completed over sixty paintings and eighty literary works over the course of his life. Much of his art was self-published and distributed in gay bars and feminist bookstores around California, where he spent the majority of his career. His works document his overlapping and shifting identities over time, drawing both from his experience as a trans man and former identification as a butch lesbian, while additionally informed by his mixed racial identity and spiritual beliefs. This collection contains several works of poetry, drama, and fiction, press catalogues, audio and video recordings of Arobateau’s performances, and personal papers.
