Digital Transgender Archive
Vanguard was an organization of LGBTQ youth living on the streets of the Tenderloin district in San Francisco. This collection includes ten zines created and published by Vanguard from 1966-1967, a retrospective zine created in 2011, and a series of photographs documenting Vanguard’s Street Sweep Protest in 1966. Vanguard served as a platform to foster community and organize demonstrations for civil rights. The zines contain poems, art, and articles that reflect issues faced by poor LGBTQ youth at the time, covering topics such as police brutality, drug addiction, and economic discrimination, while later issues address the Vietnam War and encourage a movement for peace. Many of these themes are captured in the Street Sweep photographs, a demonstration organized to protest ongoing police harassment in the neighborhood. This collection also includes an edition of Vanguard Magazine from 2011 that republishes original content with retrospectives by the authors and new contributors who share some of their experiences.
