He is dressed in a Pierrette costume copied almost exactly from Pelissier's Follies, one of the most popular London companies at this time. Godfrey, being extremely professional in both dress and make-up, appears in many of the postcards of the Timbertown FolliesA scene from one of the many revues staged by some of the 1,500 or so members of the First Royal Naval Brigade, interned as prisoners of war in the camp outside Groningen, northern Netherlands, from 1914 to 1918, which they nicknamed HMS Timbertown. As they were not involved in any conflict and were housed in reasonable comfort with time on their hands, they were able to stage some very elaborate and professional theatrical revues which became famous back in the UK. Before his tragically early death from alcoholism and undiagnosed mental problems at the age of forty-three in 1903, Dan Leno had become the best loved and most highly paid comic actor in the world. His part in the development of the pantomime as known today cannot be underestimated. From 1888, under the aegis of Augustus Harris at the Theatre Royal,  Drury Lane, the Christmas season show became a highlight of London's theatrical and Society year. These productions showcased the comic genius of Dan Leno who performed a variety of roles, including Dames unrivalled in their humour and pathos.
