Jessica’s life has revolved around three main axes: political advocacy, healthcare, and music. Her dedication to transgender-related data collection led her to work in HIV care for many years, including completing the Transgender Needs Assessment Survey (WTNAS), which she considers one of her greatest achievements. Her advocacy led to the establishment of trans-specific HIV care programs, making significant contributions to the health and well-being of transgender communities. In 1999 she became the first openly transgender artist to release a CD. Her work as an activist, scholar, and artist has garnered recognitions such as the Public Service Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex and the Distinguished Service Award from the For as long as she could remember, Lisa felt that she should have been born a girl. Lisa entered into the military at age nineteen for four years, choosing to live off-site rather than risk military staff combing through her possessions and finding her lingerie. After spending the previous two years living life as a woman when not at work, Lisa came out as transgender at age 47. She realized she finally wanted to begin hormone therapy to medically transition, and began traveling to California for treatment. After reconnecting with religion, Lisa became a teacher and delivered lectures at local colleges about the transgender community. She served in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1978. In 1997, Monica underwent the process of transitioning and reapplied to the Phoenix chapter of the U.S. American Submarine Veterans Group but received significant resistance and was referred to a generic Veterans Group for women. Monica campaigned against the decision and became the first woman to ever join the organization. Monica then co-founded It’s Time Arizona, an Arizona-based organization advocating for equal treatment for trans people in the military. In 1999, she created the iconic transgender flag, which became a symbol of transgender pride.
